On 29 Nov 2018, the CKY Education Charitable Trust and Choi Koon Shum Education Foundation cheque presentation ceremony was held at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). The Foundation donates HK$50 million to CUHK for development of a hostel and a cultural centre in the United College. The donation is a continuation of the Choi’s families and Sunwah’s public services and support to CUHK’s long term development.
Chief Executive of HKSAR Mrs. Carrie Lam, Dr. Jonathan Choi and Mrs. Janice Choi, Council Chairman of CUHK Dr. Leung Nai-pang, President of CUHK Professor Rocky Tuan, Chairman of the United College Board of Trustees Ms Lina Yan and Head of the United College Professor Jimmy Yu officiated the ceremony. More than 100 guests including directors and officials of CUHK, and friends from the political and commercial sectors attended the ceremony.
Professor Tuan expressed his gratefulness to the Choi’s families. The donation is a great encouragement and a recognition of CUHK’s tradition in adopting a collegiate system, general education and civic service.
Dr. Choi has a deep connection with CUHK. He has been appointed director of the United College since 1991. In 1995, the “Choi Koon Shum General Education Resources Centre” was established to upgrade technological facilities in the United College. In the same year, Dr. Choi supported the establishment of the “Yang Chenning Visiting Professorship Fund” to award outstanding graduates in physics, and to invite renowned physicists to visit and lecture at CUHK. Subsequently, a number of scholarships were established to fund needy students.
